Kerry Washington Receives Honorary Doctorate, Addresses Graduates at Alma Mater

Harkening back to her college days, Kerry Washington gave the commencement address at her alma mater George Washington University on Sunday (May 19) in Washington, DC.

In addition to making the speech, the “Scandal” actress, who donned the traditional cap and gown, received an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts at the ceremony.

Ms. Washington graduated from the prestigious school with a Bachelor of Arts in 1998, where she designed her own interdisciplinary studies ranging from acting to psychology and sociology.

Speaking to the class of 2013, she talked about memories of her time in college, including a particularly trying time where she had to work hard to keep her scholarship.

She also encouraged grads to follow their dreams like she did, saying, "Your life is your story and the adventure ahead of you is the journey to fulfill your own purpose and potential.”
