Zayn Malik speaks for first time since quitting 1D: ‘I just can’t do it anymore, it’s not real to me’

Good news Directioners we can all stop worrying, checking Twitter, crying and hyperventilating randomly now - Zayn Malik is OK. The former One Direction star has given an interview for the first time since he sensationally quit the band earlier this week and he's happy to be gone, even if you aren't happy that he is gone.

Speaking to The Sun Zayn has admitted that he hadn't been happy as part of 1D for quite a while now and although his departure seems to have been sparked by the whole cheating accusations scenario of the last couple of weeks the 22-year-old singer says he just felt that it "was not real to me" anymore.

He said: “It is crazy and wild and a bit mad but at the same time I've never felt more in control in my life." Zayn also spoke out about rumours of a rift between him and his former bandmates Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson denying there was any bad blood between them and admitting he believes they will carry on without him for a long time.

Zayn also confessed that the only reason he hadn't left the band sooner was because he felt like he had to stay to keep other people - including his huge worldwide fanbase - happy, but it had reached the point where he simply could not do it anymore so he had to make the decision to leave.

He continued: "I'm only upset (because) I feel like I may have let them down in some sort of way. That's the main thing that I don't want to happen. It's not that I've turned my back on them or anything, it's just that I just can't do that anymore because it's not real to me.”

Zayn also dismissed rumours that his fiance Perrie Edwards of girlband Little Mix had anything to do with his decision admitting "she's a good girl," and that she had been there to support him through the decision. Whilst Zayn was photographed heading in to a recording studio since the split he has also denied any plans to go solo just yet revealing he just wants some time to "chill" first.

Zayn made his decision to quit public in a statement on Wednesday. He said: “My life with One Direction has been more than I could ever have imagined. But, after five years, I feel it is the right time for me to leave. I'd like to apologise to the fans if I've let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right in my heart. I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight. I know I have four friends for life in Louis, Liam, Harry and Niall. I know they will continue to be the best band in the world.”
