Eagles co-founder Glenn Frey has passed away at age 67.
The guitarist had been battling "intestinal issues" for months prior to his passing, and his health troubles prompted the Eagles to bow out of plans to accept their Kennedy Center Honor in December.
At the time of the November announcement, the group's spokesman, Larry Solters, simply revealed Frey needed "major surgery" and required a lengthy period of time to recover.
Frey eventually passed away from rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis and pneumonia.
The rocker was a founding member of the Eagles and co-wrote many of the band's hits, including Take It Easy, Lyin' Eyes, and Hotel California.
He also enjoyed a successful solo career after the group's split in 1980, and hit the top of the charts around the world in 1984 with his song The Heat is On from the Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack. He also ventured into acting, landing a recurring role on 1980s TV series Miami Vice.
The Eagles reunited for a comeback tour in 1994 and they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.
Frey released his fifth and final solo album, After Hours, in 2012.
Confirming the sad news in a statement on Monday (18Jan16), his bandmates wrote, "Glenn fought a courageous battle for the past several weeks but, sadly, succumbed to complications from Rheumatoid Arthritis, Acute Ulcerative Colitis and Pneumonia.
"Words can neither describe our sorrow, nor our love and respect for all that he has given to us, his family, the music community & millions of fans worldwide."
