Lady Gaga’s “Applause” Nabs Number Two Spot on Billboard 200

From the neck down, Lady Gaga was chic, glamorous, and all in black as she greeted fans outside the famed Chateau Marmont Hotel in West Hollywood Thursday (August 15). Her face, however, was covered in colorful clown-like make up.

Making a series of similarly colorful and theatrical appearances on the streets of Los Angeles, the 27-year-old songstress is promoting her new single, “Applause” from her upcoming album, ARTPOP.

The pubic PR campaign runs contrary to the reverse psychology marketing video she recently released, in which the "Born this Way" singer proclaims, “If you don’t like pop music, you should turn this off.” Further, the video goes on to urge Gaga’s fans, “DO NOT buy her new single 'Applause' on iTunes. Give her no A-P-P-L-A-U-S-E. DON'T dance to the song at all."

Regardless, thousands of fans are scooping up “Applause.” It’s currently number two on the iTunes Singles Chart, just behind Katy Perry's new release, Roar. The album ARTPOP comes out on November 11th.
